Online advertising may currently be in a slump, but Internet usage continues to rise and more and more people are buying on the Internet! Advertising on the Internet is sure to bounce back, and if you're planning a career in advertising, interning at GayOKC.com can give you the real world experience you need right now to build your career on when you graduate!

How do you attract advertisers to the Internet? This is the challenge facing the advertising industry as it pioneers a field in its infancy. This is also the challenge faced by GayOKC.com: how to compete for advertising dollars with the other media serving Oklahoma City's GLBT Community, including TV and especially print (not to mention billboards, bus benches, and light pole banners!)

Interning at GayOKC.com offers advertising students a unique opportunity to learn about advertising through the medium of the Internet from the inside. Advertising interns will become familiar with the standards and practices of Internet advertising, and will learn how to apply those concepts to actual marketing and publicity campaigns on GayOKC.com. You will learn how Internet advertising breaks new ground as the creators of Internet advertising seek to discover the most effective ways to achieve the desired results for their customers, whether that be getting people to buy a product or service, visit a website, promote an event or a political message. You will also learn how the traditional rules of marketing still apply even at the forefront of Internet technology, such as the fact that face-to-face, real time, actual human interaction still remains the most effective way of dealing with advertising customers in many situations (such as closing a sale with a first time advertiser). GLBT-friendly advertisers in Oklahoma City have been particularly resistant to e-mail and web campaigns to convince them to advertise on GayOKC.com. Interns seeking experience in advertising sales must be prepared to spend time on personal meetings and telephone conversations to convince potential advertisers that GayOKC.com is worth their money.

Duties:

Designing and creating ads for use on GayOKC.com

Students must have access to a computer with graphics software, Internet access and e-mail.

Students will become familiar with the various types of advertising used on the Internet, including banners, buttons, skyscrapers, pop-ups, e-mail, etc.

Students will be writing copy as well as designing graphics.

Closing ad sales

Students must have access to a car.

Students will develop marketing skills as they gain experience at motivating potential clients to advertise on GayOKC.com. Marketing advertising on GayOKC.com requires the use of a broad range of strategies, including Internet, e-mail, regular mail, telephone, and personal visits.

Despite the technology available on the Internet, advertising still requires personal communication skills to both sell advertising space and create effective advertisments.

Managing and bookkeeping

Students will learn how manage contracts, bill for ads and collect revenue, track and report advertising sales and revenue.

Students must display personal integrity and honesty in handling funds received from ad sales.

Creativity

Students must possess imagination and motivation.

Scheduling:

Scheduling will depend on internship requirements, class schedule, and work load.

Internship hours will be based on time spent on performing duties, including meetings with clients, developing campaign strategy, working on ad design and copy, etc.

Interns must also be available for staff meetings, project meetings, training sessions and evaluation sessions.
