The following is an press release from the Cimarron Alliance Group
(Posted 3-9-01)
After much debating and discussions, Cimarron Alliance Group announces indorsements for candidates of the upcoming City Council elections for the Oklahoma City area.
Cimarron Alliance Group is supporting Ward 1 candidate, Mick Cornett. Mr. Cornett is a progressive candidate who does not believe gays and lesbians should suffer prejudice simply because they are gay or lesbian. We believe that if elected and over time, Mr. Cornett will be an asset to the City Council. We encourage all members of our community that live in Ward 1, to support Mr. Cornett.
Cimarron Alliance Group is contributing to Ward 3 candidate, David Carroll. Mr. Carroll also believes that discrimination is wrong and he would support a human rights ordinance that includes sexual orientation. Mr. Carroll has an uphill battle against appointed incumbent Larry MacAtee. We encourage all residence of Ward 3 to vote for Mr. Carroll.
Cimarron Alliance Group is indorsing and contributing to Ward 7 incumbent candidate Willa Johnson. Willa Johnson has been a friend to our community. She has supported Cimarron's mission wholeheartedly. We pledge to work closely with Willa in the upcoming year and she has promised to introduce a comprehensive human rights ordinance that includes sexual orientation. We urge all members in our community to support Willa Johnson for City Council.
The Board of Directors of Cimarron Alliance Group made these decisions after lengthy interviews with the candidates and discussions with members of Cimarron Alliance and members of our community. These brief indorsements do not cover the whole spectrum of issues each candidate openly discussed with us during the interview process. We urge all members to contact their respective candidate in the Ward in which they reside. Speak openly and honestly and ask the questions you need to be answered so that you can make an informed decision. The Cimarron Alliance Group Board believes it is supporting the right candidates for City Council for Oklahoma City. As in any elections, time will tell.
Cimarron Alliance Group pledges to you that we will closely watch the City Council and work together with each council member so that a comprehensive human rights ordinance can be introduced, discussed and with luck passed. It is the right thing to do for our community and the right thing to do for Oklahoma City. Please vote, March 20, 2001.
Paul Bashline
President
Cimarron Alliance Group
