  • Project NEXT: A Regional Economic Evolution - 3:30PM, Cox Convention Center, downtown OKC. The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce is hosting a town hall meeting as part of its Human Capital and Diversity initiative. Participants will discuss discuss diversity, opportunity and economic growth in Oklahoma City. The Chamber says it is seeking help to develop strategies that will attract educated and talented individuals.
    This is apparently the second stage in a process that was started at a meeting with members of the GLBT Community on Sunday, August 22 at the Sonic building in Bricktown. PFLAG OKC president Rob Howard played a role in organizing that meeting.
    According to the
    Project NEXT page on the Chamber's website, "Chamber Chairman Burns Hargis has placed special emphasis on this initiative. This is a Chamber workforce development initiative that complements ongoing economic development initiatives." "Successful economic development requires not only aggressive recruitment of business and industry but must also recruit the right people. The project will develop and begin to implement an aggressive strategy to grow and attract people to Central Oklahoma who will fuel economic growth for decades."

  • James Randi - James Randi - pseudo-science debunker extraordinaire - is coming to Oklahoma City University on September 14th. Mr Randi will be offering two lectures: "Critical Thinking in a Business Environment" at 1:30, and "Critical Thinking: Science vs Pseudoscience" at 7PM. The lectures are free and open to the public.
    Randi is the author of such books as Flim-Flam! Psychics, ESP, Unicorns, and Other Delusions and exposed famous psychic Uri Geller as a fraud. He has issued a standing challenge to pay one million dollars to anyone who can show - under scientific conditions - evidence of any paranormal, supernatural, or occult power or event.

Wednesday, September 15

  • Unconstitutional - The ACLU of Oklahoma will present a screening of the documentary film Unconstitutional from producer Robert Greenwald at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15 in the Noble Theatre at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, 415 Couch Drive. Unconstitutional is a work filled with startling revelations about the erosion of civil liberties in the three years since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. ACLU National Executive Director Anthony Romero and Legislative Director Laura Murphy are featured prominently in the film.
    Doors will open for the event at 7:30 p.m. A brief discussion after the screening will be moderated by ACLU of Oklahoma Executive Director Joann Bell and President C.S. Thornton. Admission to the event will be $10. Proceeds will benefit the continuing funding of the organization's staff attorney position. Viewers can opt to pay at the door or obtain advance reservations by calling 405-524-8511 and using option four.
