FILMHEADS: BOYS DON'T CRY AWARDS SWEEP?

By the FILMHEADS Webmistress - While the Academy Awards are still to come, several other recognitions ceremonies have been held and tear-filled winners walked off with accolades. There's definitely a pattern of winners from the lists I have seen. Yet, I can't imagine the traditional, homogenized Academies following suit. Read on and see what I mean.

Here are a few of the recent winners:

A tie: BEING JOHN MALKOVICH
and TOPSY-TURVY

Best Supporting Actress:
Chloe Sevigny in BOYS DON'T CRY

Best Director:
Mike Leigh for TOPSY-TURVY

Online Film Critics Society
Best Film:
AMERICAN BEAUTY
(I think this is a safe bet for Academy voters)

BEST OFFICIAL WEB SITE:
THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT
(Can anyone ever wear a knit hat without be ridiculed for looking like those pathetic kids?!)

Broadcast Film Critics Association
Best Actress:
Hillary Swank IN BOYS DON'T CRY

Best Supporting Actor:
John Malkovich in BEING JOHN MALKOVICH
(This sounds so existential doesn't it?)

Best Director:
Mike Leigh for TOPSY-TURVY

(So is there anyone out there who hasn't heard about those damn frogs?)

Best Actress:
Hillary Swank in BOYS DON'T CRY

Best Director:

Hillary swank in BOYS DON'T CRY

What are the odds the Academy Awards will go out on a limb with the obvious choices from recent ceremonies?

So, the lesson here: see BOYS DON'T CRY and TOPSY-TURVY when they arrive. And keep your fingers crossed as you pass the cheese fondue Academy Awards nite. It COULD happen!

(Oscar nominations will be announced Tues, Feb 15. The 72nd annual Academy Awards will be held Sunday, March 26. You can sign up for an Oscars e-mail newsletter at www.oscars.com! -Rob)
