Same-sex 'wedding' to be broadcast live on KISS-FMxxxx

UPDATE
I received the following e-mail from Deborah & Debbie today: Wed, 2-14.

Rob,
The morning was a complete success!  They decided, "to hell with the sponsors" and treated us like every other couple. A retired judge stood before us all, and had no trouble including us in the "mass ceremony." The radio station personalities were professional and mentioned us on air several times. We were given some really great gifts form the station and other sponsors including Lottonville Grill, Candy Bouquet, Challenger Wireless, and Panera Bread Co.
While we stood holding hands, and repeating our vows, we both felt that we were given a really unique opportunity to show all those in the room, and all those listening on air that love between two people can NEVER be wrong! It was a great day.

UPDATE
I received the following e-mail from Deborah & Debbie yesterday - Fri, 2-9. The 'Stacey' referred to is Stacey Harris, Jack & Ron's intern at KISS-FM. When I e-mailed Stacey to confirm this story, she replied that she didn't know about it since she left the station at 10:15AM. Deborah & Debbie's e-mail to me was sent at 11:35AM.
I then e-mailed Jack Elliott, Ron Williams & their show's producer, Joel Roberts, to confirm this story & have not yet received a reply.
For the record, when I first e-mailed the show on Wednesday to confirm the original story, I got a very determined confirmation from Stacey, that said in part: "I am proud to say that yes we are doing a "union" for Deb & Deborah on our show!! Jack & Ron are supposed to get with them today and go over more specifics. We have gotten alot of support and also alot of negative  feedback - but we are sticking to our guns and doing what we promised."

Rob,
I'm not sure what Stacey told you yesterday, but I just got off the phone with the radio station and here is the REAL story :)
Sponsors have put the pressure on, and have basically told them that if they "spotlight" the gay ceremony, they will pull their ads. The radio station is of coarse not happy about being essentially CENSORED, but they conceded to the "threats." We will in fact be there at the studio, standing with the other couples, but the judge performing the ceremonies will not address us personally, and our names will most likely not be said on-the-air. We are in my words, will be "seen and not heard."
We give tremendous credit to the radio station for sticking their necks out for what is right, and feel incredibly disappointed that we live in an age where love can be so threatening to other people that they resort to financial threats, and discriminatory measures. Hopefully, in our lifetimes at least, we will see some real change when it comes to equality in the state of Oklahoma.

Sincerely,
Deborah & Debbie

The following is an email I received from Deborah & Debbie
(Posted 2-8-01)

OK, Here's the scoop!
My girlfriend and I called a local radio station and asked if we could join their Valentine's Day celebration. They are having a mass wedding live-on-the-air, on Valentine's Day in their studio. They were very enthusiastic, and told us that it has never happened before, but that they would accommodate us. Here is where it gets interesting! Once that was said on the air (1/24) an onslaught of emails, & telephone calls AGAINST the ceremony started, and still continues. the station defends their freedom of speech rights, and their decision to have any guest they choose. Provisions have been made that will enable us to stand with 5 other couples, and get "married." If you would like more information on this go to:
Jack and Ron of 98.9 KISS FM/Oklahoma City. Open the discussion page (message board) and read pages 1, 2, 3 & 4. So far over 300 posts have been written regarding this issue. It proves to be some very interesting reading!

Would love to hear from you again, after you read this site.
Thank you for your interest.
