David H. Ray, an openly Gay candidate for Norman City Council, was sworn into office on April 23.  After a heated campaign that included mass mailings of anonymous hate mail, he soundly defeated his opponent in the April 9 general election with 61% to 39% of the vote.  In a statement issued the night of his victory, Ray stated, "My thanks go to the voters who demonstrated that candidates with an instinct for the negative profoundly misread the people of Norman."  Since 1992, David Ray has been a professor of political science at The University Of Oklahoma.  He graduated cum laude from Yale and received his M.A. and Ph. D. from Stanford University.  He lives in Norman with his partner of 12 years.
