EDGE
OF SEVENTEEN 8:30PM
EDGE OF SEVENTEEN is a real gem. Set in 1984 in Sandusky, Ohio, it follows the coming-out of a naive 17-year-old teen-ager at exactly the moment when gender-bending pop stars like Boy George and Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics were flaunting androgynous images. As the youth, played with a heartbreaking sweetness by Chris Stafford, goes through his first rites of gay passage (after being callously used by the slightly older boy who brings him out, he tries to retreat to heterosexuality with his closest female friend) he emerges as a poignant gay everyman. Lea DeLaria is wonderful as his butch lesbian boss at the amusement park restaurant where he meets his first boyfriend. -Stephen Holden, THE NEW YORK TIMES

DIFFERENT
FOR GIRLS 4PM
DIFFERENT FOR GIRLS stars Rupert Graves as Paul Prentice, a 34-year-old locked in the Seventies punk-era of his teenage years, and Steven Mackintosh as the priggish Kim Foyle, who wants to erase from her memory everything that happened before her sexual transformation from male to female in 1993. The gender-bender romance is a uniquely poignant, but funny look into the emotional adjustments that a handsome, heterosexual, extroverted male and an attractive, introverted transsexual "woman" must make in order to have a relationship. That the two, as young boys, were best friends at school 15 years earlier only deepens the elements of curiosity and embarrassment in their accidental reunion and subsequent courtship. Worlds apart in their attitudes toward life, they no longer appear to have anything in common. However, the physical attraction they feel now is ironically as strong as their childhood bonding. Taking the best from their differing lifestyles, she teaches him to grow up and he teaches her to have fun...and somewhere along the way they fall in love. But, expect the unexpected.
BEDROOMS AND HALLWAYS 7PM
Leo and Darren are two gay flat-mates in London, each pursuing his own romantic happiness. Leo is a reserved, witty artisan searching for a meaningful, loving relationship while Darren is his "memorably flamboyant and sexually adventurous flat-mate" (Village Voice) hooked on dangerous erotic liasons - including a relationship with a seemingly conservative real estate agent who has a flair for combining business with pleasure. Despite his intitial reservations, Leo finds himself joining a new-age men's therapy group and promptly develops a crush on a handsome fellow member who has recently separated from his longtime girlfriend. Confessing his attraction during an "honesty stone" session led by well-intentioned host Keith, Leo wreaks havoc on the group as everyone begins to question their own sexual inclinations. In an increasingly confusing atmosphere in which desire, sensuality and deep feeling gleefully mingle together, it becomes apparent that whatever overt or hidden sexual preference each person might have, they all seek the same thing: someone to love.
OUTART 99 is proud to bring to Oklahoma City this highly anticipated new comedy from Rose Troche, the director of GO FISH.

HARD 9PM
Described as a Gay SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, HARD is one of those movies you'll either love or hate. Bound to be of the more controversial offerings at OUTART 99, HARD has been both fascinating and alienating audiences on the Gay and Lesbian festival circuit all year with it's chilling, intensely harrowing depiction of a Gay cop's effort to bring a ritualistic Gay serial killer to justice. It doesn't help that the cop starts out in the closet AND manages to become one of the suspects. He also becomes a pawn in a mind game being played on him by the actual killer, a game that starts out with his being seduced by a man who turns out to be the culprit he's been looking for. Will he turn the tables on him or vice-versa? Can you handle the intensity? There's only one way to find out: buy a ticket!

LIKE
IT IS 5PM
LIKE IT IS is a tale of Matt, a self-assured Londoner who is in control of his life and his career, and Craig, a Northern bare-knuckle boxer who discovers his sexuality and tries to come to terms with a whole new world and set of emotions. They meet in Blackpool and after a clumsy sexual encounter Matt returns to London, only to be followed by Craig and the two soon fall in love. Matt introduces Craig to the freedom of gay life in Soho and his music business friends. Craig is overwhelmed by the new world he has entered but feels as though his background causes mockery from Matt's "sophisticated" friends. Unfortunately most of Matt's friends try to break them up. They include his chicken hawk boss Kelvin, played by Roger Daltrey and Matt's popstar flatmate, played brilliantly by Dani Behr, who's jealous of the fact that Matt's attentions are no longer fully focused on her.
WHEN LOVE COMES 5PM
Sexuality saturates the screen in this complex urban love story set against a vibrant world where creative energy runs rampant, illicit substances fuel artistic juices, and sex is always available, but love is elusive. Katie Keen, an aging singer who has seen her star rise and sputter in Los Angeles, comes home to Auckland, New Zealand, to reassess her life and reinvent herself if she can. Even though she's being pursued by her hunky boyfriend, Eddie, she moves in with her best mate, Stephen, the only person she allows herself to lean on. Stephen has been playing all her old hits, much to the amusement of the youthful object of his affection, Mark, a promising lyricist who writes through a haze of alcohol, dope, and confusion. When Stephen asks for more maturity than he can deliver, Mark cavorts with his fellow band members, Fig and Sally, an extreme pair of girlie punk rockers hell-bent on stardom, who idolize Katie and urge Mark to bring her into the band.

Shy Robert also secretly dreams of settling down with Marc, who is on the lookout for the perfect 10 and thinks he's found one in sexy pop-star-wannabe David. Meanwhile, zany Cynthia longs to work at a chic fashion magazine and is determined to dress the part - even if it means bailing on the rent! Can they survive the city AND each others foibles?
