STATEWIDE GLBT SUMMIT - LATEST INFO
PLEASE CIRCULATE
LAST REMINDER!
Oklahoma Freedom and Equality Summit Meeting January 9-10, 2004 - Stroud, OK
Dear Friends,
This email is a follow-up to the invitation mailed in December inviting you to join a growing number of organizations and faith groups who support equal civil marriage rights and oppose the “so-called” Federal Marriage Amendment” in an Oklahoma statewide coalition. The interest, support and response for this coalition have been fantastic! Already there are twenty-five (25) (Yes, count them 25!) groups who are planning to attend the January summit meeting in Stroud. (For a list of organizations and faith groups who have already responded saying they will attend the meeting, see the end of this email.)
We hope each of you who are receiving this email will plan to send representatives of your organization(s) to the meeting in Stroud. If you have not called or emailed to let us know you will be attending – please do so today! Once again the details are as follows:
WHO: All interested organizations, faith groups and individuals are invited to attend.
WHAT: A summit meeting to form the Oklahoma Freedom and Equality Coalition
WHEN: Friday, January 9, 2004 6—10 p.m. (registration is 6-7) , Saturday, January 10, 2004, 9 am—3 (we'll get you out of there as soon as we can)
WHERE: at the Best Western Hotel, I-44 and Stroud Exit, Stroud, Oklahoma.
WHY: It is time for all of us to unite and work together to achieve freedom and equality for all. The immediate need is to work together to alert, educate, and mobilize our communities to work for equal civil marriage rights for GLBT persons, to stop the “so-called” Federal Marriage Amendment, and to take a stand against any anti-gay resolutions in the state of Oklahoma.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR JANUARY 9-10TH PARTICIPANTS:
All organizations wishing to be a part of the coalition should have up to two representatives empowered to make decisions present at this summit meeting. (All interested persons are invited to attend.) Please bring information and resources about your organization/faith group and have copies available for coalition participants. We will have tables set up for you to display your information.
Friday night is an important introduction to the summit meeting. We will be asking all participants to talk about their organization/faith group and the gifts they bring to the coalition. Please plan to attend both Friday night and Saturday.
LOGISTICS:
Some people are choosing to spend Friday night at the Best Western. We have reserved a block of rooms. If you wish to make a reservation, please call the Best Western and let them know you are with the Oklahoma Freedom and Equality Coalition. Best Western Stroud Motor Lodge, 1200 North 8th Street, Stroud, Oklahoma, 918-968-9515, located at Turner Turnpike, Interstate 44 and Highway 99, Stroud Exit 179. We have a special rate of $45.00 + tax.
Registration will be Friday evening 6-7 p.m. We will begin the program promptly at 7 p.m.
There will be a seafood buffet in the Restaurant at the Best Western from 5-9 p.m. on Friday night. The cost of the buffet (not including drink) is $7.99. Our meeting room will be set up so you may go through the buffet and eat in the meeting room.
You may order breakfast off of the menu in the restaurant on Saturday morning. We will begin the program promptly at 9 a.m. Saturday morning.
There will be a lunch buffet on Saturday for $5.99. Again, individuals are responsible for the cost of their own buffet.
We will have water, coffee (regular and de-caf), and soft drinks available in the meeting room during our meeting Friday evening and all day Saturday. We will ask for $.75 donations per drink.
This is an extremely important effort to build a coordinated campaign to effect social and legislative change in Oklahoma. It is time for us to join in a statewide campaign that builds on each of our organization’s mission and goals. If ever there was a time for us to come together and be united, it is now!
Be a part of the Oklahoma Freedom and Equality Coalition—call us today and tell us you will be there!
See you in Stroud!

THE KEY TO THE CLOSET DOOR IS YOUR BALLOT
Dear Editors:
The upcoming nationwide Spring primaries and November election will be the most critical voting opportunities that gays/lesbians and our straight supporters have ever had in history. The 2003 court decisions concerning sodomy and same-sex laws have galvanized people on both sides of these civil issues. All of us will be affected in ways which can bring equality and day light to our lives or will bring back the closet door. Each person reading this possesses the key to the closet door in the form of a ballot marked at your polling place for progressive candidates who will support gay/lesbian equality.
Yes, we're all in this together. The problem is that too many gays/lesbians go their merry way without a single thought as to how important it is to elect people who are supportive of gay/lesbian equality. Gay life is more than cruising the bars, and watching stereotypical Stepn' Fetchit TV shows like Queer Eye, Ellen, Will & Grace, etc.
It involves getting with the program and talking to friends, family, and co-workers about equality in a non-accusative way in order to point out the fallacies of the fundies and the politicians of any party who use homophobia as a weapon to ensure their re-election.
Gays/lesbians can get involved with a campaign and help with phone banking, letter stuffing, sign making--in short, all those things which can help promote the candidate, but for which there is not enough money to pay anyone to do, which makes you and your time literally priceless.
And there's the secondary possibility you might meet Mr/Ms. Perfect! Give it a try!

OKLAHOMA GLBT LEADERS ENDORSE DEAN
Over 100 Oklahoma Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Leaders have endorsed Governor Howard Dean, candidate for the Democratic Party's nomination for President of the United States.
"Governor Dean has been the only candidate to back up his speech with action, by signing Vermont's civil union law - and he stood with us through the political fallout that came with it, " says Keith Smith, a National Board Member of the Stonewall Democrats.
Dean's GLBT supporters plan to reach out to the gay community throughout the next month, since that community has been a cornerstone of Dean's campaign since the early days.
