Silent
March, 9AM- An opening ceremony will be held at the
Ralph Ellison Branch Library at NE 23rd and Martin
Luther King Boulevard at 9AM. Oklahoma Peace House
director Nathaniel Batchelder will be the keynote
speaker. At 10AM, the silent march will step off and
proceed past the State Capitol to the Old Historical
Society Building, where a bell ringing ceremony at 11:30AM
will coincide with similar planned ceremonies
nationwide.
Parade, NOON- The
opening ceremonies for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Parade will take place at noon at Calvary Baptist
Church in Deep Deuce at NE 2nd and Walnut. In a break
from parade routes of past years, marchers will
proceed south on Walnut over the Walnut Avenue Bridge
to Sheridan, where they will turn west through
Bricktown, then north on Robinson and around the
Oklahoma City National Memorial, then back on NE 2nd
to Calvary Baptist Church.
Colloquium, 7PM, Norman - A colloquium will be held
in Norman Monday, January 15th to honor Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. The event will be held in Meachum
Auditorium, The Union Building on the OU Campus, at 7
p.m. The Union Building is located at 900 Asp Avenue
in Norman. Sponsors include OURAP (University of
Oklahoma Racial Awareness Program), a student
activist group of United Ministry at the University
of Oklahoma.
Representative Opio Toure, D-OKC., will speak to the
group about issues near and dear to him, Racial
Profiling and Hate Crimes. As Representative for
House District 99, Toure authored a bill last session
that would outlaw "racial profiling", a
practice sometimes used by law enforcement to stop
persons that fit a "certain profile". Many
times these persons may only be guilty of being in
the wrong place at the wrong time, or being the
"wrong" race or gender in a place they
don't seem to "fit". Toure, a long time
advocate for equality for all, also will address
another issue, the Hate-Crime legislation that was
passed and vetoed last year. Had that bill become
law, it would have made it illegal to commit certain
acts, motivated strictly by race, creed, national
origin, religion, gender, etc. The Legislature did
authorize the formation of the "Tulsa Race Riot
Commission" to investigate various charges and
allegations of the infamous Tulsa event that occurred
in 1921.
Senator Cal Hobson, D-Lexington, has served in both
the House of Representatives and the State Senate
since 1978, and is considered by many to be an expert
in the area of "prisons" and incarceration.
He has become known nationally for his expertise in
this field. Hobson has long been an advocate for
alternative methods of punishment for criminals
instead of just "warehousing them". He will
address the issues of the percentage of minorities in
prison, and on Death Row, versus their number in the
general population. He will, no doubt, point out that
minorities and mentally ill people are overly
represented in prison, and on Death Row. Senator
Hobson serves on the Appropriations Committee, as
Vice-Chair, so he is very knowledgeable about State
Finances and Expenditures.
Dr. George Henderson is an OU professor, purported to
be the first African-American to actually own a home
in Norman. This occurred in 1965. Dr. Henderson will
discuss his personal trials and tribulations in this
regard. He still lives in Norman.
The Colloquium will be emceed by former Norman
Representative, Wallace Collins. He stated that a
reception will follow the gathering.
