OKLAHOMANS CAMPAIGNING TO 'STOP DR. LAURA'
In the past couple of days I have
received the following e-mail from several Oklahoma GLBT
and straight-supportive people. It was originally posted
to the Gaynet e-mail list by John Aravosis, founder of
Wired Strategies, a Washington, DC-based 'political
Internet consulting' firm (www.wiredstrategies.com) on
Thursday:
Friends, this is important -
please help if you can, and forward to as many people
as possible....
*** STOP DR. LAURA ***
When 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney belittled Native
Americans ... he got suspended.
When golf announcer Ben Wright mocked lesbians... he
got fired.
When writer Jimmy Breslin denigrated Asians... he got
suspended.
When Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott disparaged
African-Americans... she got fired.
When football player Reggie White attacked gays... he
got dropped by CBS and Campbell's Soup.
When Jimmy-The-Greek stereotyped blacks... he got
fired.
But Dr. Laura calls gays "biological mistakes"...
and she's getting a TV show from Paramount.
Enough is enough. Paramount pulled a show in
1998 that offended African-Americans ("The
Secret Diary of Desmond Pfeiffer"), but is fine
when Dr. Laura equates homosexuality with incest and
pedophilia. Gay, lesbian, bisexual and
transgendered Americans deserve equal respect, not a
double standard.
WE STILL HAVE TIME, BUT WE NEED EVERYONE'S HELP.
EMAIL PARAMOUNT NOW AND DEMAND DR. LAURA BE DROPPED.
THEN SEND THIS MESSAGE TO 10 FRIENDS.
Paramount's email address:
television@pde.paramount.com
"How many letters have I read on the air from
gay men who acknowledge that a huge portion of the
male homosexual populace is predatory on young
boys?'' - Dr. Laura quoted by Reuters/Variety,
Feb. 13, 2000.
Friends, the real predator is intolerance, hatred and
bigotry - and it has led to tragedy too many times.
In the names of:
Matthew Shepard
Billy Jack Gaither
Allen Schindler
Barry Winchell...
In the name of every one of us...

GLBT FILM IN OKC! GO SEE ALL ABOUT
MY MOTHER &
BOYS DON'T CRY!
Editorial
by Rob Abiera - OKC's GLBT Community will
have a unique opportunity this weekend when 2 movies open
here, the likes of which almost never grace local theater
screens. Both films are independent, both feature unusual
and challenging subject matter, one is foreign, and,
perhaps most important to this market, both feature
strong GLBT themes. Pedro Almodovar's newest, All
About My Mother, is coming to OKC's
Brixton Square Theater from Spain, via Sony Classics and
some determined local independent film fans (visit filmheads.tripod.com for the
full story!), starting this weekend. It is the story of a
woman's search for the father of her son, who has been
killed in a car accident, a father she never told her son
about because, though her son was named Esteban after his
father, his father's name is now Lola. Boys
Don't Cry, the intense
dramatization of the story of Brandon Teena, starts at
the AMC Quail Springs 24 this weekend. Both films are
vying for Oscars (Best Foreign Film for All
About My Mother, Best Actress -
Hilary Swank - and Best Supporting Actress - Chloe
Sevigny - for Boys Don't Cry),
which surely accounts for at least part of the reason for
them being in OKC at all. All About
My Mother was NOT originally
scheduled to come to OKC. Before this week's developments
at Brixton, the closest All About My
Mother was supposed to get was
Norman, where it is scheduled to open next week.
GO SEE THESE MOVIES! Tell all
your friends, gay, straight, or whatever, to see these
movies! The more local theater managers see that we will
support these movies with our ticket and concession stand
money, and the more they see that movies like this are
not going to draw unwanted attention in the form of
protests by the Religious Right, and are not going to
chase the straight audience away from local theaters, the
more open they will be to bringing GLBT-themed movies to
OKC the next time an opportunity comes along!
Events like OUTART 99, which
brought several GLBT-themed movies here last year, are
important. But our local theater managers need to see
that GLBT movies can stand on their own, outside of any
special occasion. OUTART was great but it's only one step
toward the goal of getting GLBT movies accepted year-round
in mainstream commercial theaters here in OKC. We
|
need to support movies like
these here in OKC whenever the opportunity presents
itself.
