GLAAD responds to critics

Local News xxNews Updated 3-1-00
REGISTRATION OPENS FOR 'FAMILY REUNION 2000' - GLSEN DIRECTOR TO SPEAK AT OU
Registrations are now being taken for FAMILY REUNION 2000, the second edition of the statewide GLBT conference organized by the Oklahoma Lambda Intercollegiate Coalition. Details on the event are now available at OLIC's new website at olic.atschool.to. The event is scheduled for Sat, Mar 25 on the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman. Keynote speaker will be Gina Reiss, managing director of GenderPAC, the national organization for gender civil rights, and an extensive slate of workshops will be offered during the day. Related events will include a potluck dinner on Fri, Mar 24 (with entertainment by Peggy Johnson), and a 'Pride Prom' on Saturday evening. Registration is $15. Though the program is geared toward youth, organizers are encouraging everyone to attend. For registration info call 325-4452 or e-mail OKolic@hotmail.com.
Also planned on Thur, Mar 23 is a visit from Kevin Jennings, the Executive Director of
GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network). This event will be free and open to the public. Teachers and students alike are invited to stay after the talk to explore the possibility of starting a GLSEN chapter in Oklahoma.

COMMUNITY RESPONDS TO PARADE COMMITTEE APPEAL FOR INVOLVEMENT
That invitations to participate in the decision-making progress involved in organizing the Pride Parade are being taken seriously this year was clearly demonstrated at Monday night's committee meeting at the home of Paul Thompson. Last year, committee co-chairs Thompson and Chris Estep were often the sole attendees at Parade meetings. On Monday night, at least 10 people eagerly engaged in discussions of various organizational issues, ranging from pricing of parade registrations to the possibility of expanding the pre-parade activities on the day of the parade to include an arts festival in Memorial Park. This year's Pride Parade takes place on Sun, Jun 25.
Organizers are holding a contest to create a design for this year's logo. The winner receives $100. Contest deadline is Mar 25.
CLICK HERE for info. The next Pride Parade committee meeting is on Mon, Mar 27, at 7PM at Paul Thompson's, 1133 NW 32nd, and is open to the public.

TURTLE CREEK CHORALE TO PERFORM IN OKC
The world-renowned Turtle Creek Chorale, under the artistic direction of Dr. Timothy Seelig, will perform in Oklahoma City next month to benefit three Oklahoma Choruses; the OKC Metro-Men's and Women's Choruses and the Council Oak Men's Chorale of Tulsa. The concert will feature performances by each of the three beneficiary choruses, followed by the Turtle Creek Chorale's presentation of music prepared for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Convention.
The Dallas based Turtle Creek Chorale is celebrating its 20th Anniversary season this year and boasts a long list of accomplishments including a 1995 EMMY Award for it's performance of
After Goodbye: An AIDS Story which aired nationally on PBS in 1994. The Chorale has produced 20 recordings, making it the most recorded male chorus in history. Several of those recordings have gone on to win national awards, and Requiem was the first Chorale CD to reach the Billboard Classical Charts. The Chorale has also won three "Telly" awards for its video public service announcements. TCC's performance credits include collaborations with The Dallas Symphony Orchestra, The Dallas Opera and The Women's Chorus of Dallas. The Chorale has performed for the Queen of England and former President and Mrs. George Bush. The Chorale made its Carnegie Hall debut in 1993.
All proceeds from next month's OKC performance will go to benefit three Oklahoma choruses. The OKC Metro-Men's Chorus, under the direction of Don Clothier, celebrated their 10th Anniversary in December, 1999. Council Oak Men's Chorale, which hails from Tulsa, was formed in 1997, under the direction of Rick Fortner. The newly formed OKC Metro-Women's Chorus, also under the direction of Don Clothier, is enjoying great success in its debut season.
The OKC performance will take place at 8:00 PM, March 17, 2000 at Village Christian Church, 9401 Ridgeview Dr. In lieu of ticket sales, a "love offering" will be accepted at the door. For more information call (405) 751-1156.
