CITY COUNCIL ELECTION Elections for OKC City Council in wards 2, 6
& 8 will be held Tuesday, March 18. The
candidates are:
Ward 2
(now held by Amy Brooks, who has chosen not
to run again)
Sam Bowman
S. Jean Clark
Susan Johnston
Chris Kauffman
Jim Sellers
Ward 5's
homophobic incumbent Jerry Foshee is
unnopposed and will serve another term (shame
on the residents of Ward 5 for not fielding
someone to run against him!)
Ward 6 Ann Simank (incumbent)
David A. Yeagley
Ward 8 Bob Bemo
Guy Liebmann (incumbent)
Susan Johnston spoke
at the meetings of both OGLPC and Stonewall
Democrats last month. Jim Sellers
is scheduled to speak at this month's OGLPC meeting (Monday,
March 10, 7PM, The Center, 2135 NW 39th Street).
Sellers and Sam Bowman are scheduled
to speak at this month's Stonewall Democrats meeting
(Wednesday, March 12, 7PM, Oklahoma Democratic Party
Headquarters, 4100 N Lincoln Boulevard. Bowman was
also scheduled to speak at the OGLPC meeting but has
canceled). Bowman, Johnston and Sellers are all
running in ward 2. As far as I know this represents
an unprecedented effort to reach GLBT voters in a
single political race here in OKC. GayOKC.com intern
Michael Coffman is working on a report which should
be online later this week.
OGLPC RATES CANDIDATES The Oklahoma Gay and Lesbian Political
Caucus has issued a voter guide to
the upcoming City Council elections. OGLPC surveyed
cadidates in Norman, Edmond and Stillwater as well as
OKC. Only candidates from Norman and OKC responded.
The ratings are now online at OGLPC's
website.
CITY HALL WEBSITE GETS NEW
ADDRESS Speaking of the city council: the OKC
City Hall website is now the City of
Oklahoma City website and its address has
changed accordingly: it's now www.okc.gov.
DYKE DIVINE RESPONDS TO TULSA

Plains Rodeo are now on display in the
Cabaret at Stage Center, 400 West Sheridan. The
photos are for sale.
DEMOCRATS HOLD PRECINCT
MEETINGS The Oklahoma Democratic Party has issued an
official call for precinct metings. ODP by-laws
require that the 2003 precinct meetings be held at 7PM,
Thursday, March 13. Precinct locations are
online at the ODP website.
HATE CRIMES BILL IN OK SENATE A bill - SB701 - is currently in the
Oklahoma Senate which would add sexual orientation to
Oklahoma's Hate Crimes ordinance. This is the bill
the Race Relations committee of the Tulsa Police
Department has worked on for the last couple of years.
The bill will change a hate crime from a misdemeanor
to a felony and includes sexual orientation as one of
the designated groups. It is being sponsored in the
senate by Maxine Horner.
This bill is currently on the Senate Calendar
awaiting action. Action (vote or no vote) must be
taken by Friday, March 14, 2003 or the bill dies.
Senator Horner has asked the GLBT-allied community to
contact our senators expressing support for SB701.
Voicing your opinion educates Oklahoma State Senators
on GLBT issues as well as possibly having an effect
on the outcome of any SB701 vote.
You can send a pre-composed email asking for support
for this bill from the Human Rights Campaign website
at http://hrc.grassroots.com/oklahoma/OKhatecrimes.
If you would like to compose your own letter or
email, complete contact info for Oklahoma state
senators - as well as the latest information on SB701
- may be found at the Oklahoma Legislature website at
www.lsb.state.ok.us.
