NAACP INVITES SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATES TO SPEAK AT MARCH 12TH MEETING
Both candidates who will be in the run-off election for Oklahoma City school board seat #4 on Tuesday, April 4th - James McMillan and Joseph Clytus - were invited to speak at the March NAACP general meeting and then to asnswer questions from the attendees.
Although both candidates agreed to appear, candidate Clytus did not show up and did not call executive committee member Paul Thompson (who had been delegated to extend the invitations) to cancel. Candidate McMillan did show up and gave a short talk and answered questions from those gathered for the meeting.
McMillan is an attorney who lives in the Lincoln Terrace addition and is running because he has many concerns about the current school board and its policies and problems. He stated that one of the big problems of the current school board is that they don't answer their phones or return calls. He said that he would be open and accessible to citizens who wished to speak to him about their concerns and would in fact hold community meetings.
Other concerns McMillan had included that people who live in near northeast OKC - and those who will be living in the new Deep Deuce developement - have no schools to send their children to.
He is very concerned about the mismanagement of money and resources by the current school board, and pledged to work for more responsible and businesslike approaches and to include the community in decision making processes.
Oklahoma City chapter NAACP president Roosevelt Milton thanked McMillan and in closing said you have my vote. When asked later Paul Thompson said that he was very impressed with McMillan and would also vote for him.
