''Those of you who will vote 'No' on this bill, I'm sorry for your fear because we as gay and lesbian people, gay and lesbian couples, we are not a threat. We're not a threat to you, your relationships, your committed marriages. ... We are your neighbors.  We are worth loving and we will love in return.''

Rep. Bill Lippert, the only openly Gay member of the Vermont Legislature, during debate on the civil unions bill in the Vermont House last week

GAY OKC MAN SELECTED AS DELEGATE TO DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION
Local openly-Gay activist Keith Smith has been selected as one of Oklahoma's delegates to the national Democratic convention, which will be held August 14-17 in Los Angeles. Smith was one of 52 delegates selected this weekend at the state convention of the Oklahoma Democratic Party at the Marriott Hotel here in OKC.

ARTICLES ON HATE CRIMES IN SUNDAY OKLAHOMAN
This weekend's Sunday Oklahoman contained several articles on Hate Crimes. In an article focusing on Hate Crimes legislation, the authors - Oklahoman staff writers Meri McManus and David Hartman - plainly state that Oklahoma City's Human Rights Commission was abolished because of Gay Rights:

Oklahoma City's Human Rights Commission was eventually abolished after a failed battle to push for an ordinance to protect homosexuals from discrimination and hate crimes.
The Oklahoma City Council formed the human rights commission in 1988 after a series of local hate crimes. But the commission began pushing the council for an ordinance to protect homosexuals, and in 1996, the council voted to abolish it.
"The council is tired of the issue always being brought forward, and the vehicle that is always bringing it forward is the human rights commission," Councilman Jerry Foshee said in January 1996. "If the vehicle is bringing you company that you don't want ... then you do away with the vehicle."

The article is online at www.oklahoman.com-cgi-bin-shart-ID=463626&TP=getarticle.
