STATE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION DIRECTOR QUITS
According to a report in this week's issue of the Black Chronicle - www.blackchronicle.com/Chronicle/Front_Page/Article_1/article_1.htm - Oklahoma state Human Rights Commission executive director Gracie Monson resigned on Mar 9 in the face of charges by Gov Keating that she overpayed herself. The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations is currently conducting an investigation into the allegation, and Keating has ordered an audit of all state agency directors to see if there are any more cases of this practice in state government.
Monson and the state Human Rights Commission have been under fire from local GLBT and GLBT-friendly activists lately over an incident which occurred at the Commission's last annual awards banquet. The Commission bestowed an award on Lucent Technologies for it's policy of supporting diversity among it's employees. The award named the various employee groups at Lucent which represent various ethnicities, with the sole exception of EQUAL! at Lucent, the GLBT group. When Lucent representatives approached Monson to inquire about the omission, they were informed that it was deliberate, "because that kind of behavior is against state law and the Human Rights Commission is not required to recognize it". Upon learning of this, Lucent Technologies made the decision to return the award, and other past recipients of Human Rights Commission awards - Oklahoma Peace House director Nathaniel Batchelder and
Oklahoma Observer editor and publisher Frosty Troy - have subsequently declared that they are returning

their awards.
According to the
Chronicle, Ken Kendricks has been named interim executive director of the Commission, and a search committee has been named to find a permanent replacement.
