GLBT ITEMS IN THE DAILY
OKLAHOMAN
There were at least 2 items of
interest to GLBT readers in Thursday's
Daily Oklahoman. On the front page
of the Business section was a story by Gregory Potts on
Jean's Plumbing owner Jean Prockish - www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/shart?ID=468164&TP=getarticle. Though
the story doesn't mention it, Jean's Plumbing is very
visible in OKC's GLBT Community through regular
advertising in the Gayly Oklahoman,
the Herland Voice,
and other publications.
Can you imagine an editorial about AIDS in the Daily
Oklahoman that doesn't even include the word "homosexual"?
The Editorial page took a rather startling turn from it's
customary Gay-bashing with a surprisingly neutral (dare I
say positive?) column on Rep. Tom Coburn's effort to
change the way the government spends AIDS funds - www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/shart?ID=468088&TP=getarticle. Rep.
Coburn doesn't think the government is doing a good job
of getting funds to the people who need them most, and
the writer (there is no byline, but I understand J. E.
McReynolds writes these) actually agrees with him! The
column makes reference to women, minorities, and people
in rural areas, but there is not one word about Gays,
their behavior, or any implication that AIDS was caused
by Gay people or is God's punishment for Gay people or
any of the homophobia that we've come to expect as being
so much part and parcel of the Daily
Oklahoman!
VACANCIES
ON STATE TEXTBOOK COMMITTEE
According to an e-mail by Jim Derby
which has been much-forwarded in the past few days,
"there
are 6 positions available on the STC [State Textbook
Committee]: Congressional District 1 (1x),
District 3 (2x), District 5 (1x), District 6 (1x),
and Lay Person (1x). The "district "
representatives must be active public school teachers.
The Layperson must have children in Oklahoma public
schools. One teacher recently resigned, several
terms expired, and the "lay" position had
been unfilled.
Friends, here is an opportunity to positively
influence the quality of public school education in
our State, by finding well-qualified people with a
balanced perspective on educational issues.
Lets identify some good candidates!"
Oklahoma's
textbook committee has been the center of controversy for
attempting to require a 'disclaimer' - which asserted
that evolution is an unproved hypothesis and urged
consideration for 'creation science' - to be inserted
into biology textbooks.
Derby attributes his information about the vacancies to
committee member Lynne Machado.
