SPECIAL UPDATE
The Justice Department is using a federal
hate-crimes law for the first time in its indictments,
issued today, against David Darrell Rice, who is accused
of murdering 2 women in Shenandoah National Park in 1996.
GLBT groups are hailing the move as "historic".
At least 3 groups have already issued statements.

Republicans: Bush Administration Indicts Anti-Gay Killer
Soulforce founder Mel White will be in Oklahoma City in
May to support Soulforce in Oklahoma's vigils at Village
Baptist Church. In addition to taking part in the
training and vigil, White will speak at the Church of the
Open Arms, Friday, May 3 at 7:30PM on "Why We Can't
Wait To End This Debate!" White says it is time to
"quit cooperating with those who oppress gay,
lesbian, bisexual, and transgender persons".

Ron Kirk, recent ex-mayor of Dallas and much admired by
many in that city's GLBT Community, won the Democratic
run-off yesterday and will face Republican state attorney
general John Cornyn in November. Kirk will be the first
black Senator from Texas if he wins.
