OKLAHOMA
SECEDES FROM UNION
The Oklahoma Legislature is attempting to deliberately
establish a state religion. This, of course, is expressly
forbidden by the Constitution, but, apparently, some
Oklahoma lawmakers desire not to be bound by that
document any longer (So much for 200 years of making this
country possible). Perhaps they would like to start a new
country and write their own constitution?
The following is from an e-mail from Jim Huff, with the
Oklahoma chapter of Americans United for Separation of
Church and State:
Thursday,
April 6th, front page "Daily D": "Bill
requires texts to list single God".
Yep, the State Textbook Committee's authority is back
in the front as the "religious right's"
objective for forced change.
Two amendments were added to SB1139:
1. "The STC shall have the authority to insert a
one page summary, opinion, or DISCLAIMER into ANY
TEXTBOOK REVIEWED and authorized for use in the
public schools of Oklahoma." (BAD, BAD, BAD!)
2. "When adopting science textbooks, the
Committee shall ENSURE THAT the textbooks include
ACKNOWLEDGMENT THAT HUMAN LIFE WAS CREATED BY ONE GOD
OF THE UNIVERSE." (UNBELIEVABLE, GOVERNMENT
DICTATION!)
Take a few minutes and call your State House member
and State Senator. Express your OPPOSITION to both of
the amendments. Express your SUPPORT for their
removal from SB1139.
SB1139 - originally passed in the State Senate -
provided:
1. that STC committee member would be eligible
"for a second term";
2. that STC committee members would receive traveling
expenses while carrying out their duties "for
the committee";
3. that the 4 new committee appointments each year
would be "two of the members certified at the
elementary level and two of the members certified at
the secondary level."
The attempted evolution disclaimer for biology texts
was prevented by the State Attorney General's opinion
that the committee had no authority to require any
disclaimers.
THOSE WHO WANT TO TURN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS INTO
AGENCIES FOR CHRISTIAN FUNDAMENTALISTS ARE SEEKING TO
GO AROUND THE Attorney General's OPINION.
TAKE NOTE OF THEIR DETERMINATION. WE MUST BE EQUAL IN
OUR OPPOSITION.
THINK WHAT THEY WOULD DO IF THEY HAD ALL THE
LEGISLATIVE, EXECUTIVE, AND JUDICIAL POWERS UNDER
THEIR CONTROL. THEY DO NOT VIEW DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM,
AND EDUCATION THE WAY WE DO.
TAKE TIME...MAKE YOUR CALLS. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT THE
CALLS BE MADE EARLY THIS WEEK.
