GLBT COMMUNITY MEETS DAILY OKLAHOMAN
A dramatic step toward healing a rift which has long been held to be one of the chief impediments to progress for the GLBT Community in Oklahoma City was taken on Wednesday, April 5, when participants in a new speakers bureau met with Sue Hale, the new executive editor of the Daily Oklahoman. The participants were Karen Parsons, Nathaniel Batchelder, Paul Thompson, and Rob Abiera and their new speakers bureau is Speakers for Gay and Lesbian Issues. CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY

NEW SPEAKERS BUREAU ANNOUNCED
SPEAKERS FOR GAY AND LESBIAN ISSUES is a new service for the central Oklahoma area which will provide speakers to groups and organizations looking for individuals willing to share their perspective on the experience of being Gay or Lesbian. Our speakers are Gays and Lesbians, they are parents of Gays and Lesbians, they are heterosexuals who support the efforts of Gays and Lesbians to be accepted by the community at large. OF INTEREST IN SATURDAY'S DAILY OKLAHOMAN
John Mallon, a member of the Daily Oklahoman's 'opinion board', responds to a previously published letter concerning the Catholic Church and the Democratic Party by local GLBT activist Victor Gorin on the editorial page of the Sat, Apr 15, edition of the paper (www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/shart?ID=475347&TP=getarticle). Also on the same page is a letter by local GLSEN organizer Joe Quigley on why schools should provide accomodations for Gay and Lesbian students (www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/shart?ID=475343&TP=getarticle - scroll down for Quigley's letter).

EDMONDSON UNDER FIRE FOR BOY SCOUT STANCE
Oklahoma state attorney general Drew Edmondson is being criticized by House Republicans for joining the Supreme Court battle against the Boy Scouts for anti-Gay discrimination. Nine states, including Oklahoma, have filed a brief in the case, which is scheduled to be argued on April 26. The brief argues that the Supreme Court should not use the Boy Scouts case to undermine state laws aimed at eliminating discrimination. Some House members say they are offended that Oklahoma appears to be giving official support to a pro-Gay position.

EX-STATE HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION DIRECTOR FACING EMBEZZLEMENT CHARGES
Former Oklahoma state Human Rights Commission director Gracie Monson faces seven counts of embezzlement stemming from alleged mishandling of state funds while she held that office, according to a story in Friday's Daily Oklahoman (www.oklahoman.com/cgi-bin/shart?ID=474742&TP=getarticle). Monson was reportedly asked to resign by Gov Keating over the incident. She did so on Mar 9.
Monson had also been under fire for another incident which occured at last year's state Human Rights awards ceremony, at which EQUAL! at Lucent was omitted from an award honoring Lucent Technologies efforts to support diversity among it's employees. When asked about the omission, Monson reportedly stated that the omission had been deliberate, because 'that kind of behavior' is against state law and the Human Rights Commission is not required to recognize it. Lucent Technologies has returned the award, which has prompted other state Human Rights award recipients to return theirs, as well.
