BULLETIN
BOARD PLAQUE VANDALIZED AGAIN Apparently the homophobes at NW Classen High
School are nothing if not persistent. There was yet
another attempt last week to remove the plaque from
the bulletin board donated by GLBT alumni. As ever,
Joe Quigley continues to document the incidents,
including the responses from Principal Davis. www.gayokc.com/quigley050303.htm
JONES
ELECTED REPUBLICAN CHAIR The Republicans held their state convention
on Friday & Saturday in Midwest City and elected
Gary Jones to serve a full 2-year term as state party
chair. Jones was elected interim chair in January to
succeed the very publicly homophobic Chad Alexander
until the state convention. In March I emailed him
about RNC chair Marc Racicot's meeting with HRC and
he actually replied, saying he was in favor of
opening discussion on issues that affect "all
citizens". Well, now he's in for a full term and
we shall see. We've seen some of the county
Republican platforms and how uniformly &
extremely homophobic they have been. It will be
interesting to see how the state platform turned out.
The Oklahoma
Republican Party claims to stand for freedom,
independence and self-reliance, yet they have a habit
of contradicting themselves with everything they do
by taking away the freedom of everyone who doesn't
subscribe to a very narrow view of religion, making
it impossible for anyone to live an independent life
by keeping thought police breathing down everyone's
necks, and telling everyone that they don't trust
them to rely on their own judgement, making it clear
that whoever writes the ORP's platforms hasn't got
the slightest idea what freedom, independence and
self-reliance really are - either that or they're
just using those words as window dressing to put over
what actually amounts to fascism. It will remain to
be seen if Jones is truly any more moderate than
Alexander was and will really be able to take the ORP
into a less self-contradictory position when it comes
to putting its professed values into practice.
