Local News xxNews Updated 1-19-00
THOMPSON URGES DEMOCRATS TO ATTEND TOWN METTING
The following statement was issued yesterday (Jan 18) by Paul Thompson, male co-chair of the Oklahoma Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus:
"The Oklahoma State Democratic Party and the Oklahoma County Democratic Party are hosting a Town Hall Meeting Wed, Jan 19 ... from 5PM-7PM at the Clarion Hotel, 4345 N Lincoln Blvd. in Oklahoma City.
OGLPC strongly encourages all registered Democrats to attend. The issue of Mike Mass's "election" has never been really resolved and the very process by which it happened was in our opinion specifically to cut the ground out from under progressive or liberal Democrats and especially to silence the voices of Gay and Lesbian supportive Democrats. If we want the politics and business as usual situation and attitudes to remain the same we can just stay home. If we want to make our voices heard we must be willing to speak up.
The "popular" wisdom among some Democrats is that we are losing elections because we are too shockingly liberal for conservative Oklahoma. Many of the progressives maintain that the reason we lose elections is that we either field candidates whose positions are so close to the Republican platform that the non-Republicans can't tell any difference and just stay home or when we do manage to run candidates that offer real alternatives the party has spent more time running for cover and hiding than actively supporting them. And then we can't seem to figure out what happened. Duh!!
Please be there and either speak up or show your support for people who do."
