900 religious leaders urge ordination of gays

Local News xxNews Updated 1-20-00
MARTIN LUTHER KING CEREMONY MARRED BY HOMOPHOBIC OUTBURST
OGLPC's male co-chair Paul Thompson reports that this year's Martin Luther King Parade and events was a success for the GLBT community despite an ugly incident which occurred at the closing ceremonies in the Myriad Convention Center: "In this year's Parade we experienced even less negative reactions than we have in the past (practically none) and more seemingly positive responses." Thompson says OGLPC always has a decorated car in the parade, as well as a banner which clearly states "Oklahoma Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus": "In past years we have experienced both positive and negative reactions from parade attendees, generally more positive than negative, though one year a woman did step out of the crowd and gesture at us with her hand as though she was shooting at us. OGLPC has recognized that Gay and Lesbian Human and Civil Rights is a cause not universally embraced by the Black community and felt this participation to be an important part of our commitment to networking and concern for the full spectrum of minority rights."
The experience of marching in this year's parade was relatively upbeat, then, until the closing ceremonies. After an invocation by Rabbi David Packman and stirring speeches by Calvin and Marilyn Luper (son and daughter of Clara Luper, a participant in the original sit-ins in Oklahoma at Katz Drugstore and John A Brown Luncheonette) the Bridgeforth Show Choir was scheduled to perform. A long time participant in both the ceremony and the Cross-cultural event held every year at Temple B'nai Israel, the Bridgeforth Show Choir is a group of young people led by Nadine Smith, who has served on the Martin Luther King Coalition organizing committee which arranges the events every year. According to Thompson, as the Choir was entering the stage to prepare to perform, Smith began to address the audience. Reportedly, Smith made remarks "about how she's doing all these things to help these kids and how we need to be a more moral and Christian society and how the devil had gotten hold of a lot of these churches and they were afraid to tell the truth but she wasn't", so she started telling her idea of the truth, part of which was that homosexuality is a sin. At this point, Thompson, as well as Victor Gorin, got up and walked out. Later that evening, Thompson says, "I received a number of phone calls from Parade committee members and NAACP members saying that they were shocked and horrified by what she said and they were calling her to tell her that she could not participate in the Martin Luther King parade committee again, nor would she be put into a position to have a microphone to go off on another tirade."
Thompson added, "OGLPC is confident that her attitude does not represent the attitudes of the Martin Luther King, Jr Festival Coalition or the attitudes of anyone in the NAACP. We expect to continue our involvement with the Parade and to put this ugly incident behind us."

OUTART BOARD LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
According to chair Tony Francis, the OUTART 2000 organizing committee is looking for additional board members to take on the responsibilities of putting on this year's festival. Specifically, they are looking for people with financial expertise to help with bookkeeping, a graphic designer, a webmaster, and a person who will work with the artists and select and arrange the art display. If you would like to help with these or any other tasks, call Tony at 752-2762. The success of last year's festival has inspired organizers to expand to 5 days instead of 3. OUTART 2000 will take place Oct 13-17. The board will meet once a month until September, when things kick into high gear. To get some idea of the effort involved, visit the OUTART 99 website at www.gayokc.com/outart99.
