Justice Department files HIV-bias suit in Oklahoma

Local News xxNews Updated 1-21-00
WORLD-CLASS COMPOSER TO VISIT OKC
Internationally celebrated composer John Corigliano, whose Symphony No. 1 was written in response to the AIDS epidemic, will be visiting the OCU School of Music on January 28 and 29. Corigliano, who has composed over 60 works, will lead workshops, participate in discussion forums, and give concerts on Friday, Jan 28, and Sat, Jan 29.
1991 was a banner year for Corigliano: his
Symphony No. 1 won awards for best new composition, and his first opera, The Ghosts of Versailles, won Composition of the Year at the first International Classic Music Awards. The Daniel Barenboim-led Chicago Symphony Orchestra recording of Symphony No. 1 won the Grammy that year (The Symphony was commissioned by the CSO while Corigliano was composer-in-residence there). A new production of The Ghosts of Versailles opened a new opera house in Hanover, Germany last April.
Selections from Corigliano's works will be performed at free concerts both nights. In addition, there will be lectures, discussion forums and rehearsals both days, and both concerts will be followed by receptions. All events will take place in the Kirkpatrick Fine Arts Building on the campus of Oklahoma City University, 2501 N Blackwelder, and are open to the public.
For more info call 521-5401.

OUTART BOARD LOOKING FOR NEW MEMBERS
According to chair Tony Francis, the OUTART 2000 organizing committee is looking for additional board members to take on the responsibilities of putting on this year's festival. Specifically, they are looking for people with financial expertise to help with bookkeeping, a graphic designer, a webmaster, and a person who will work with the artists and select and arrange the art display. If you would like to help with these or any other tasks, call Tony at 752-2762. The success of last year's festival has inspired organizers to expand to 5 days instead of 3. OUTART 2000 will take place Oct 13-17. The board will meet once a month until September, when things kick into high gear. To get some idea of the effort involved, visit the OUTART 99 website at www.gayokc.com/outart99.
