OLIC
CONCERT TO BE ALL-NIGHT PARTY
The concert being held by the
Oklahoma Lambda Intercollegiate Coalition at Diversity
Coffeeshop this Saturday night will last until 2 in the
morning, organizers say. The show will be co-hosted by
two students from the University of Oklahoma, Timothy
Brown, and Fresca Sparks. Performances will include punk
bands, acoustic solo artists, and drag performances.
Some of the performers will be Same Day Service, Eric
Sarmiento, The Lees, Fresca Sparks, and Desree Tarelle.
The concert begins at 8PM. Cover is $5 and tips and
donations will also be accepted. Proceeds from the
concert will help fund OLIC's second annual conference on
March 25 at OU. For more info call Timothy Brown at 360-9664.
Diversity Coffeeshop is located at 1739 NW 16th in
Oklahoma City.
MORE
ON THE MILLENNIUM DINNER
By Paul Thompson While the
state Democratic Party may be less than enthusiastic in
its acceptance of Gays and Lesbians, as a real party the
same cannot be said about the Oklahoma County Democratic
Party. On Sat, Jan 22nd at 6:30PM the
County Party held the "Millennium Dinner"
banquet at Applewood's Restaurant in Oklahoma City, and
the event was quite a success. The organizers
had expected or hoped for about 20 tables of 8 people but
there were 37 tables. The highest level of
sponsorship was "Platinum" and Cimarron
Alliance was the only donor in that category, although
many other groups and elected officials attended and
contributed.
Terry Gatewood of Cimarron was featured in the program.
The fairly newly formed Gay/Lesbian group Stonewall
Democrats hosted 2 tables and its co-chair Karen Parsons
was also featured on the program.
The Keynote Speaker was Frosty Troy who exhorted
Democrats to get busy working and to stop talking to each
other and start talking to other people, especially young
people.
It was heartwarming to see the range of people
represented by attendance and the room was filled
virtually to capacity. Early estimates are
that the event raised over $10,000, which will be used to
start a PAC and helped fund the campaigns of Oklahoma
County Democratic candidates. Former
candidate for state representative J. Alex Greenwood will
head the PAC.
Other fundraising events will be held throughout Oklahoma
County between now and the November elections.

TOWN
MEETING NOT A TOWN MEETING BUT A PEP RALLY
By Paul Thompson The
Oklahoma State Democratic Party and the Oklahoma County
Democratic Party co-hosted a so-called town meeting from
5PM to 7PM on Wed, Jan 19th at the Clarion Hotel in
Oklahoma City. State Democratic Party leaders,
including state treasurer Robert Butkin, attorney general
Drew Edmondson, state auditor Clifton Scott,
superintendent of public instruction Sandy Garret,
commissioner of insurance Carroll Fisher and Oklahoma
City councilperson Ann Simank took turns speaking, as did
Oklahoma County chair Jeff Hamilton and
state party chair Mike Mass. There were few
surprises to be had in any of the speeches. However,
Rep Mass did say that everyone there must know that the
Democratic National Committee had decided that he could
not be seated at the Democratic presidential nominating
convention unless there was another election held at the
state party meeting in March and that an election would
indeed be held, and laughingly asked state senator Gene
Stipe to stay away so that we could be sure it would be a
fair election. Mass added that at this time
there were no announced candidates to run against him for
the position. The speakers took longer than
expected and that was either the reason or excuse for the
fact that there was no question and answer session as one
would expect in a real town meeting. The
crowd gathered was very large. It was, in
fact, standing room only. That was because
people came expecting to have the opportunity to ask some
questions and get some answers. However, some
party leadership may be under the impression that the
size of the crowd represents a seal of approval.
