ISTOOK
WANTS YOUR OPINION! GIVE IT TO HIM!
Editorial
by Rob Abiera - Last week I received a
"report" in the mail from Ernest Istook, our
Representative to Congress from the 5th District. In
addition to a glowing recommendation from "Dr Laura"
Schlessinger, there is a piece about the Boy Scout ruling
in which he implies that Homosexuality is immoral. There
is also a survey and a town meeting schedule, accompanied
by admonishments to share your thoughts and opinions with
Congressman Istook. Take him up on it! Write Istook and
let him know (politely) that you disagree with him! Tell
him that you are a constituent and that you think that
Homosexuality is NOT immoral, and that, regardless of
whether or not Homosexuals are ever allowed to become
Scoutmasters, you disagree with the Boy Scouts of America
when they say
that Homosexuality is immoral. Remember, brief letters
work best. Don't vent your spleen! You want to come
across as a mature, reasonable person. You can use the
comments function on his website at www.house.gov/istook/guest.htm or send e-mail
to istook@mail.house.gov. You can
write him at
Honorable
Ernest Istook
United States House of Representatives
2404 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515
You
can call his Washington office at 202-225-2132 or fax him
at 202-226-1463. (This info, by the way, comes from the
Oklahoma Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus website, which
has contact info for lots of elected officials at www.geocities.com/oglpc/contact.htm.)
OR you can "Come Share YOUR Thoughts With
Congressman Istook!" face-to-face. Istook has
scheduled several town hall meetings in the 5th District
next week. In OKC they are: Mon, Feb 21, 2PM, Mercy
Hospital, McAuley Physicians Building ( lower level ),
4205 McAuley Blvd, Conference Center, Rooms A, B, and C;
Wed, Feb 23, 2PM, Brighton Garden Assisted Living by
Marriot, 12928 N. May Avenue; Fri, Feb 25,
2PM, Hefner Middle School Cafeteria, 8400 N. MacArthur.
Several more meetings are scheduled in the Central
Oklahoma area next week. The complete schedule is on
Istook's website at www.house.gov/istook/conserv.htm.
FILMHEADS: BOYS
DON'T CRY AWARDS SWEEP?
While the Academy Awards are still
to come, several other recognitions ceremonies have been
held and tear-filled winners walked off with accolades.
There's definitely a pattern of winners from the lists I
have seen. Yet, I can't imagine the traditional,
homogenized 'Academies' following suit. Read on and see
what I mean. MORE>

PARENTHOOD CELEBRATES NATIONAL CONDOM WEEK
Planned Parenthood of Central
Oklahoma (PPCO) is encouraging people to 'Just Wear It'
this week as they celebrate the 23rd annual National
Condom Week, which begins Feb 14. The group is marking
the occasion with condom giveaways, bumper stickers,
quizzes, contests, a media campaign, and an information
table in the University of Oklahoma Memorial Student
Union in Norman. According to PPCO director of
educational services, Terry Dennison, "Valentine's
Day presents a natural opportunity to promote the role of
latex condoms in (preventing sexually transmitted
diseases.)" "Our goals for this year's National
Condom Week celebration are to start new conversations
about condoms, to promote access and consistent use, and
to add some fun and humor to the mix."
PPCO is encouraging people to contact or visit the
Planned Parenthood clinics in central Oklahoma: Norman,
Edmond, Midwest City, central OKC and south OKC. Call 1-800-360-PLAN
to schedule a visit. For more information about National
Condom Week call 528-0221.
