Honorable Mayor Kirk Humphreys
200. N. Walker Ave.
Oklahoma City, OK 73102
Dear: Honorable Mayor Humphreys,
Pride Network Inc., requests the Office of the Mayor
and the City
Council of Oklahoma City proclaim the month of June
to be Gay and Lesbian
Pride month. We also ask that the Office of the Mayor
and City Council of
Oklahoma City proclaim June 23, 2002, as Gay and
Lesbian Pride Day.
As you are aware, the United States and the World
recognize the
contributions of the gay and lesbian community and
Oklahoma City should be no
different. This month will mark the 15th year that
Oklahoma City will
celebrate its diversity by holding its annual gay and
lesbian celebration.
Since the tragedies of September 11, 2001, with the
unity expressed by all
Americans, we believe this event to be of the utmost
benefit to the citizens
of Oklahoma City. As you are aware this festival and
parade is inclusive of
all people. All of the major universities in Oklahoma
are represented. Last
year there were 15 churches and religious
organizations involved, 62 civic
organizations, several veterans groups, 45 local
businesses, 3 fortune 500
companies, 3 international companies, 5 local and
state media groups, and 3
international media groups. Last year attendance to
both the festival and
parade exceeded 10,000 people coming together in
celebration from across the
nation and the world.
We believe attendance at this 15th anniversary
celebration will be
double what it was last year. This is a great
tradition for Oklahoma City
and we request that the city formally recognize this
and help us celebrate
"The Power of Courage."
