Joe Quigley: Lambda Legal gets it wrong

The following is an email from Joe Quigley
(Posted 1-13-02)

When Lambda Legal won the Detroit case concerning Gay and Lesbian History Month displays, I was a little miffed because in an article they called it the only case of its kind. I thought that was a slight to OKC, as in 1999 the day my event happened I called them and asked for help. I was told to document things. Finally I was informed that as funds were limited LAMBDA preferrred to take cases that were winnable, and as this was not winnable they would not take the case.

When I emailed them of this not long ago, they replied stating there was no record of my contacting them, and that obviously they couldn't have said that.

Yesterday when looking through some old papers I had in my classroom to help the teacher in that jock situation I found the fax receipt.

I emailed the following to Lambda. (IT REALLY BOTHERS ME THAT THEY DISMISSED OUR COMMUNITY FOR A BIGGER NAME, AND THEN CLAIMED THAT NO CONTACT HAD EVER BEEN MADE. WE OKLAHOMANS SHOULD NOT BE SO EASILY IGNORED.) -- not that, that's me venting. What I emailed is below.

<< I went back to some old papers.
I had written to you recently that your statement that the Detroit case on Gay and Lesbian History Month displays was not, as was stated in an article, the only such case of its kind, and that I had contacted you in 1999 about a similar case in Oklahoma City.
You emailed that there was no such record of my contact.
HOWEVER, among my papers I found the FAX statement noting the date and time of my faxing of a chronology of events (faxed Jan 30, 1999) and addressed to the attention of "Jonathan" who, not only was the intake person I had spoken to, and had directed me to send this information, but who was also the person who informed me that it was the judgement of the "review board" that the case was not winnable, and that as funds were limited winnable cases were preferred.
If you need me to, I will fax the copy of the dated fax receipt.
Please get back to me on this as I have passed this tid bit on to the Gay community here, as I am less than pleased that Oklahoma City was so dismissed, while the Detroit case has been labelled the only one of its kind. By way of information, there has been much progress here on this, and there may be a favorable result to the two year battle here, that may have been swifter with a little help.
