The following is an email from Joe Quigley
(Posted 8-16-02)

Today I received yet another memo from the principal. Some people have asked what they can do to help my situation, and all I can request at this time is someone supply a fishing pole I can pass on to the principal, and perhaps a subscription to Field and Stream in his name as he seems intent on "fishing".
Again the memo is worded in such a way as to make it appear I have willfully done something that needs to be addressed, and is obviously, as was his fabricated memo about the invented content of the meeting of 08/12/02, an attempt to make a case for a progressive discipline procedure that could have as its goal my termination.
Boy, they really don't want affirming information easily available to GLBT Students, nor It would seem a positive role model who is not reacting as a scared little boy like it is assumed we are supposed to.
From what I can only imagine, the "charge" can only be based on the following scenario, as I have only used the Xerox machine twice this year, both times making three copies each time of the memos he has sent me.
I make a copy for the union, my records, a file I keep close at hand so as not to have to lug around the Big Book O' Documentation I keep in bat-cave like seclusion, and I put the original in the Big Book O' Documentation.

When I received the fabricated content memo, and as I was preparing to sign out at the end of the day, I was leaning on the counter in front of the Xerox machine speaking to some teachers as they signed out ( among the conversations I was having my almost daily friendly discussion about various topics with our resident conservative until he was called away). In the past two years I have carried papers and other items in a canvas bag I received at a regional AFT meeting, but as I now have a car (and intend to keep this one) I do not have to carry a lot of things around, and the bag ended up filled with a lot of crap anyway from necessary things to scraps of paper that, I am sure, were vital for some reason at one time or another and paper clips I only found by running the thing through the wash.
So far this year, I have only been carrying one of those leather folder type things (a gift from my mother who is presently a little pissed at the present foolishness----although being who she is would use a little nicer euphemism) with the legal pad on one side and storage pouches on the other. At the time in question I had his memo, Frosty Troy's paper, a satiric post card on "family values", some travelers checks in an envelope, and some miscellaneous papers related to the union and politics.
Someone was at the machine as I was talking, so I stood there sifting through the various papers to get the right memo, and when that person was done, I turned to th machine. As my copies were coming out of the machine, the principal, displaying an interest in what I was copying, came and stood beside me making a comment about the large number of copies I was making (4 is large? He must be overwhelmed when encountering a dozen eggs).
As the copies came out of the machine they were face down, and even I was a little concerned I had incorrectly put the original in the auto-feeder with the wrong side up and the papers were blank. I hadn't, and I found this out to my relief when I checked the copies at the end of the run.
There is also a reference to fax machine usage. Admittedly, I have used the fax machine. I have faxed material to the local AFT office, and there have been occasions, such as when I applied for a summer school job, when the directions at the bottom of the form stated that it could be sent, hand delivered or faxed to 900 NKlein (school H.Q).
This is the wording of the memo, and you will notice that the implication that I abuse the use of these machines is stated as if a fact.
Vagueness leaves much to the imagination of the reader. As we all know by references in our childhood to that "thing" that lives under the bed, the more vague, the scarier it is allowed to seem. This also makes it appear to be the truth if stated in the form of a fact.
I responded to the memo agreeing to a meeting this coming monday, 08/19/02, and found a xerox copy of my note with the principal's response in my mailbox. When this happens (receiving a xerox copy made on the school's Xerox machine) it usually means that the sender is keeping a copy (usually the original) in order to begin a file.

(Heading with first initial and last name---usually it is only the initials, so things have entered a new level)

Please see me during you [sic] plan period today or immediately after school to set up a satisfactory meeting time to discuss personal use of the copier and fax machines (we only have the one in the principal's secretaries office to my knowledge, so it would seem he is attempting to make it look like my actions are rampant) at NWClassen. You may bring a representative to this meeting. (my contractual rights make it totally unnecessary for him to appear that he is allowing this at his largesse).
Thank you for your cooperation with this request.

and so it continues. From day one of this year, in spite of no action on my part, the principal is making some sort of case. If I, as I do somewhat in this email, seem to be making light of this it is only to keep it in perspective.
