The following is
an email from Joe Quigley
(Posted 8-21-02)
At our monday (08/19/02) meeting which included
myself, the Union Rep and the principal, I thought we
had pretty much arrived at somewhat of a solution to
this non-existent copier/fax problem. Basically in
accordance with the contract the principal would make
whatever copies are needed by those who handle
discipline and subsequent grievances, and that when
he gave me a memo whether it was a notification of a
meeting or anything else related to this or any other
new or ongoing"issue", he would include up
to four copies so I would not need to make them.
I am more than sure of this as I took
notes and the principal had no problem with my taping
the meeting.
The whole copier/fax policy will
be brought up to the faculty escpecially as it was
more than obvious that I had not violated any
procedure or policy, and perhaps everyone should be
clear on the use of these two machines, as according
the principal he was aware of such abuse.
I did mention for the record that
I had never abused either the fax or the copier, and
that I have never reached or come near my yearly
allotment of copies.
So it was quite a surprise today (08/21/02)
when, standing talking to some people in the office,
my suspicions cultivated during all the mess of the
last three years kicked in and I approached the copy
machine. There were teachers there running off
various things which I did not bother to check, so
the machine was in fine working order. When they were
done I entered my pass number ( 3 0's followed by the
last four digits of one's social security number) and
received the message that I was denied access as I
had exceeded my allotment. During the meeting the
principal had noted on more than one occasion that
the number of copies he saw me make was four.
Does that mean that whereas
all others can run off up to 20 copies at a time for
class use, my allotment for the academic year 2002-03
has been held at four?
I also found it as
interesting as the fabricated summary of our meeting
of 08/12/02 which seemed to appear as "evidence"that
I was neglectful of duty and indifferent toward
policies and proceedures as outlined plainly in the
faculty handbook, that within a day of pointing out
my never reaching my allotment, the machine now says
I have.
So, is the principal
attempting to fabricate a case for termination by
first misrepresenting the content of a meeting to
make it appear I am what I am not, and now having a
machine accuse me of something conveniently after the
fact?
Another question arising
would be if I am held to the same performance
requirements of other teachers when I am (AGAIN)
singled out for treatment? Remember, this happened
with that poster memo for a whole year.
And, I will end with this.
The principal in having
nothing upon which to base an accusation of copier
abuse brought up his objection to teachers taking
jokes off the internet, making copies in the office
and then distributing them to other teachers.
Although this had nothing to do with me as I had, and
the principal agreed, been running off four copies of
a memo he wrote on school stationary, during school
time, about something school related, he thought it
needed airing in the friendly, chummy part of the
purposeless meeting.
Yet, in the notebook I
was using at this very meeting I had a xerox copy of
a cartoon taken from the internet by another teacher,
copied in the office, and then given to faculty
members which bore at the bottom of the page the
letters "OK' along with the principal's
signature and the date 08/15/02, the date of the day
before he wrote the memo calling for the meeting to
discuss office copier abuse.
Your guess is as good as
mine as to when this will stop. I thought it had, but
I was apparently wrong.
