The following is an email from Joe Quigley
(Posted 9-3-02)

Because October is Gay And Lesbian History Month, and knowing, or at least suspecting, that there will be a little reluctance to do the right thing, perhaps going so far as to delegate the decision to others as was done last year so that they could be the scapegoat in the supporting of bigotry game, or that the "discussion" which will always promise, yet never deliver a positive decision will drag on to the point as to go beyond October, rendering the whole point moot, I sent the following memo to the principal of NWClassen at approximately 10:30 am, 09/03/02 to begin the yearly ritual.

(heading)

As next month, October, is National Gay And Lesbian History Month, in accordance with the addendum to Paragraph J of the Faculty Handbook which says in part, "Anyone wishing to post...shall request AND RECEIVE permission from the principal...", I am requesting permission for a display in my classroom to acknowledge this month.

A proposed display would consist of a list of famous GLBT People from the past and present, as well as books by, for and about GLBT Youth, and books on GLBT History.

I am sure you can see the positive influence such an acknowledgement will have on our GLBT Students, their peers and Teachers here at NWClassen, and how this will help in reducing targeted harassment, bullying and other forms of violence while increasing tolerance and understanding.

As our purpose is to prepare students for life-long learning and for success in life and the work place, I am sure you can see the value of acknowledging this month and the contributions made by GLBT People to our society and culture.

If you are uncomfortable that such a display be limited to one classroom, I am sure togther we can find a more suitable and less restricted place for it.

As soon as I receive a response I will pass it on. I certainly hope that the response will be positive. One would think that with 150 documents as of 09/03/02 (many multi-paged, and with a few documenting misrepresentation and fabrication) that have been collected since October 1999 relating to NWClassen (not to count the other 88, also many multi-paged, directly related to the down town administrators, as well as the word of mouth, through the grape vine information that points to a lot of fabrication and distortions which I will not relate as they are just that, grape-vine sourced), the district might feel compelled to do the right thing and stop the second class treatment of the GLBT Students.
Perhaps this will be the year of reason.
