RE: YGLA FLIER

On Monday, 10/06/03, I will be resubmitting the flier for the Young Gay/Lesbian Alliance (YGLA) which has hung on the Community Bulletin Board since it was presented to NWClassen, but which this year in a change from past practice you passed on to someone else who refused to post it because it went against her conscience to have students attend a meeting at a location in the middle of what she terms an "adult entertainment district", a phrase so chosen for its obvious negative connotation.

In one of our previous meetings, as I have verified with my building representative, it was your view that rather than have the school supply information to our GLBT Students, they should go to such off campus sources as the Center.

However, because of one person's opinion and prejudice (as evidenced by the use of "adult entertainment district" as a term for the area where the Center is located), the existence of YGLA and its meeting place are not being made known to students for whom it is necessary, or would be of positive help.
The hypocrisy of this is shown by the signs around NWClassen advertising a High School Bowling league which meets at the 66 Lanes. Having been a member of a bowling league which met there I am familiar with the establishment and the fact that liquor is sold on the premises. There seems to be no problem allowing students to go to a bowling alley where adults are drinking alchohol in the same area where our students will be involved in an activity to which they have been invited by the school.
The Center which is run through Red Rock Behavioral Health Services is located between a record store and a coffee shop. Although there are bars in the area that cater to adults, as ALL bars do, they are in buildings separated from the Center by walls, stores, or outside space , and are not in the same physical space as the one in the bowling alley is.
If the conscience of one person can have such an impact on the needs of our students, should this conscience not be bothered by the bowling alley situation, or is this just another example of selectivity in regards thing important to Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Students?
Even such an appearance of this does not send a good or consistent message.
