Help Bring Mel White
and Jimmy Creech to OKC in May & June
Rev. Dr. Mel White and Jimmy Creech To Speak and
Attend Vigils in OKC
Help us raise money to bring Mel White and Jimmy
Creech to Oklahoma City! We need to raise $2500
to cover the cost of airplane tickets, lodging and
food, and a small honorarium. (Both Mel and Jimmy
have agreed to come without pay, but we would like to
raise enough to give each an honorarium.) Won't
you help us?
Rev. Dr. Mel White is coming to Oklahoma City May 3 -
5. He will speak at Church Of The Open Arms,
3131 N. Penn., OKC, Friday evening, May 3rd at 7:30
pm. He will be at the vigil training on
Saturday, May 4th, and will participate in the vigil
outside Village Baptist Church on Sunday, May 5th.
In 1997, in Atlanta, Georgia, the Rev. Dr. Mel White
was awarded the ACLU's National Civil Liberties Award
for his efforts to apply the "soul force"
principles of Gandhi and King to the struggle for
justice for sexual and gender minorities. In 1998,
Mel and his partner, Gary Nixon, founded Soulforce,
Inc. to help mobilize people of faith to do justice
for God's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
children. The author of Stranger at the Gate: To
Be Gay and Christian in America, Mel serves as
the Executive Director of Soulforce, Inc. www.soulforce.org/mwbio.html
Jimmy Creech is coming to Oklahoma City May 31 - June
2. He will speak at Church Of The Open Arms,
3131 N. Penn., OKC, Friday evening May 31st at 7:30
pm. He will be at the vigil training on
Saturday, June 1st and will participate in the vigil
outside Village Baptist Church on Sunday, May 5th.
Rev. Jimmy Creech, the minister who was defrocked
from the United Methodist Church for performing a
same sex union is the Chairperson of the Board of
Directors of Soulforce, Inc. Creech said,
"I have decided to officially become part of
Soulforce because I believe in the goals of this
movement, to use relentless non-violent resistance to
end Spiritual Violence. Unfortunately,
Spiritual Violence against GLBT people originates
from all parts of Christ's body. As people of
conscience, we need to hold churches accountable for
their bigotry and their contribution to Spiritual
Violence against God's children." www.soulforce.org/jimmybio.html
